Fall Retreat: A Day of Compassion and Mindfulness

Ease into the holiday season with a day of compassion and mindfulness at the serene St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in west Little Rock. This all day retreat will be led by Catherine Crisp, PhD, MSW, Mindful Self-Compassion Teacher, and three amazing social workers and mindfulness practitioners: Kerri Michael, LMSW, RYT 200; Veronica Paulson McClane, LCSW; and Laurie Swain, LCSW, Certified MBSR Teacher. The morning will consist of guided meditation and information on wholistic living and participants will have the opportunity to talk and engage with each other. The afternoon will be spent in silence with only the meditation leader's voice as your guide. Retreatants are asked to bring a sack lunch to eat during the lunch hour from 12 - 1; water, tea, and light snacks will be provided throughout the day. Childcare for children 5 and under will be provided at no charge by requesting it at this link. Requests for childcare must be made by October 18, 2019, so that appropriate staff can be scheduled. After childcare expenses are paid, all funds from the retreat will be donated to a fund at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church to support those who are challenged to pay their utility bills. A certificate of attendance will be provided to those who request it and would like to submit them for continuing education credit, however, approval of the CEUs is subject to approval by your licensing body. We hope you will join us for this day of compassion and mindfulness. Questions you may want answered: How can I contact the organizer with any questions? If your questions are not answered below, please email Catherine at Please put "Fall Retreat" in your subject line of your message.  Is the setting where the retreat is being offered accessible to people with mobility issues? Yes. The room where we will hold the retreat is on the main floor of the building and accessible via a flat entrance with no stairs from the parking lot. The bathroom is easily accessible from the room where we will meet. If you need assistance entering and departing the building, please let Catherine know and she will ask someone to greet you and assist you. We want this retreat to be accessible to all those who would like to attend. Is the setting accessible to people with a hearing loss? Regrettably, we do not have the resources to provider interpeters but are sensitive to people who experience a hearing loss and retain some hearing. Catherine has a hearing loss and wears a hearing aid so she is particularly sensitive to people who experience a hearing loss. All meditation leaders will use a microphone when speaking. If you need to sit in a particular place in the room to facilitate hearing the meditations, please email Catherine so that she may arrange this for you prior to others arriving at the retreat.  Is prior meditation experience required? No. The retreat is open to anyone who is interested in attending, regardless of their meditation experience. There will be some brief introductory information about meditation presented at the begining of the retreat. What type of meditation will be offered? The focus will be on mindful meditation which uses the breath as an anchor. Most meditations will be guided and consist of a combination of verbal invitations and periods of silence. Is the retreat open to those who do not attend St. Margaret's Episcopal Church? Yes. Anyone who is interested may attend. Since the retreat is being offered at a church, is there a focus on God or other Christian principles? No. This is a secular retreat. It does not focus on God or any other diety. People of faiths, including no faith, are invited to attend.  I can't attend all day. Can I attend for only the morning or afternoon? No. Participants are asked to attend for the entire day as the afternoon will build on the morning. Moreover, we are intentonally limiting the retreat to 40 people so that we have a smaller group of people who can connect with others at the retreat if they desire to do so. How long will we be sitting for at any given time? The longest anyone will be asked to sit for a single period of time is 45 minutes. However, as with all of the meditations that Catherine leads, participants are encouraged to shift their position and to stand or lay down at any time they need to. There will also be chair yoga and moving meditation sessions offered in the retreat. What should I bring into the event? Retreatants are asked to bring a drink bottle and lunch to eat during the lunch break as well as anything else they need to be comfortable. Chairs will be provided to sit on but those who prefer to sit on the floor are encouraged to bring a mat and/or cushion. As the temperature in the room and outside may vary, retreatants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and may want to wear layers and/or bring a small blanket. Water, tea, and snacks will be provided throughout the day. Is St. Margaret's Episcopal Church affiliated with the Arkansas House of Prayer? Can retreatants visit the House of Prayer while at the retreat?  Yes. St. Margaret's is affiliated with the House of Prayer. Retreatants are welcome to meditate at the House of Prayer and to walk the labyrinth. The House of Prayer will remain open to those in the community who would like to use it. Those who visit are asked to maintain silence while there.  Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? No. You will be asked to sign in when you arrive and to indicate if you would like a certificate of attendance emailed to you after the retreat.
